Why Yoga Retreats Are So Popular Right Now — And Why We’re Craving More Than a Vacation

Why Yoga Retreats Are So Popular Right Now — And Why We’re Craving More Than a Vacation

When Did We Start Needing a Vacation From Our Vacations?

We've all taken that trip. The flights. The reservations. The packed itinerary. The alarm set early because there's something else we need to see before the day ends. We return home with hundreds of photos, a suitcase full of laundry — and somehow, the feeling that we need another vacation. Increasingly, travelers are asking for something different.

Not simply Where can I go?

But: How do I want to feel when I come back?

That shift may help explain why yoga retreats and wellness retreats have moved from a relatively niche corner of travel into something much bigger.

BookRetreats' 2026 State of Retreats report found that 64% of surveyed U.S. travelers already had a retreat planned within the next 12 months, while 78% expressed interest specifically in attending a yoga retreat. Rest and relaxation remained the biggest overall motivation for retreat travel, followed by mental wellbeing and recovery from stress and burnout.  We aren't only trying to get away anymore.

We're looking for space to come back to ourselves.

Why Are Yoga Retreats Becoming So Popular?

Yoga retreats sit at an interesting intersection of several things people are craving right now:

Movement without constant performance. Travel with intention. Time in nature. Space away from screens. Community. Rest.

And perhaps most importantly, enough uninterrupted time to actually experience the practice rather than squeeze it between everything else. In a normal week, yoga may be the hour we carve out between meetings, errands, family responsibilities, notifications and everything waiting for us once class ends.

On retreat, the rhythm changes. The practice isn't something you fit into your day. The day begins to organize itself around the practice. And that can feel very different.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. We're Craving Travel With a Purpose

One of the most interesting findings in the 2026 retreat data isn't about yoga at all.

It's about intention.

Among travelers surveyed by BookRetreats, 81% said purpose-led travel matters to them. Retreats also ranked ahead of spa treatments, supplements and gym memberships among respondents' planned wellness spending.

People still want beautiful places. But increasingly, the destination itself isn't enough. We want the trip to give us something. Maybe that's clarity. Maybe it's rest. Maybe it's meeting people we never would have met at home. Maybe it's finally having enough quiet to hear ourselves think. Or maybe it's simply waking up somewhere beautiful, rolling out a mat and realizing that there is absolutely nowhere else we need to be.

That's a very different form of luxury.

2. A Yoga Retreat Creates Something Our Daily Lives Rarely Do: Space

Think about your normal yoga class. Maybe you arrive seven minutes before it starts. Your phone is still in your hand. You're answering one final text. You roll out your mat, take a breath, and slowly begin transitioning from everything happening out there to everything happening in here.

Then class ends. And within minutes, the outside world returns.

A retreat stretches that transition across days instead of minutes. There may be morning yoga, meditation, nourishing meals, walks, journaling, afternoon movement and evenings with nowhere urgent to be. The value isn't necessarily that every moment is filled with wellness activities. Quite the opposite.

Sometimes the most important part is finally having white space.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. We Want to Disconnect — So We Can Actually Reconnect

There's also a very modern reason retreats feel increasingly appealing: We're exhausted by being reachable.

A 2026 study published in the International Journal of Tourism Research examined 522 guests who had experienced a digital-free yoga retreat. Researchers found relationships between memorable digital-free retreat experiences and greater reported subjective wellbeing, psychological resilience and desire to return. The study doesn't mean putting down your phone is a cure-all, but it adds an interesting research layer to something many of us intuitively recognize: uninterrupted time away from digital distraction can feel profoundly refreshing.

You don't necessarily need to surrender your phone at the front desk to experience this.

Sometimes it's simply: Not checking email before morning practice. Leaving your phone in the room during dinner. Watching a sunset without photographing it. Having an entire conversation without looking down. Letting yourself be somewhere without simultaneously being everywhere else.

Yoga has always invited us into the present moment. A retreat simply gives us more time to stay there.

4. Yoga Travelers Are Choosing Softer Experiences

One of the most fascinating retreat trends right now is a movement away from the idea that wellness always needs to be intense.

Among U.S. travelers interested in yoga retreats in BookRetreats' survey, 33% were interested in restorative yoga retreats, compared with 15% for Vinyasa Flow and 14% for hot yoga.

That doesn't mean challenging yoga is disappearing. We love a sweaty practice at Unalome. But it does suggest that people are increasingly recognizing something yoga has always understood:

Effort and rest belong in the same practice.

You can love heat, strength and challenge — and still need Yin. You can love Sculpt — and still need Savasana. You can move deeply without constantly pushing harder.

This fits into the broader wellness shift we've been exploring in the Unalome Journal: moving away from relentless self-optimization and toward presence, recovery and learning to listen to what the body actually needs.

5. Retreats Are Becoming More Than Yoga

Here's another reason the traditional yoga retreat is evolving. Travelers don't necessarily want seven days of identical yoga classes. They want an experience.

In the same 2026 survey, 42% of people interested in yoga retreats said they wanted yoga paired with another activity — including meditation, hiking, massage, cooking, swimming, surfing and sound healing. Another 40% were interested in retreats combining multiple styles of yoga.

It makes sense. Yoga becomes the thread running through the trip rather than the entire itinerary. Morning Vinyasa. Breakfast overlooking the ocean. A hike. An afternoon swim. Rest. Dinner with people who were strangers three days ago. Evening Yin.

The retreat becomes less about completing hours of yoga and more about experiencing what life feels like when movement, nature, nourishment, curiosity and rest coexist.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

6. Community May Be Part of What We're Missing

There's a paradox to modern wellness. We've never had more ways to practice alone. Yoga classes stream into our living rooms. Meditations live on our phones. Workouts happen through apps. Our watches remind us to breathe. All of that accessibility is incredible.

But it can also remove something yoga studios have traditionally given us: other people. Retreats put community back into the experience.

BookRetreats found that 91% of surveyed travelers expressed interest in retreats centered around relationships, connection or community, while 42% said work and daily responsibilities leave too little time for meaningful connection.

There is something uniquely intimate about practicing beside someone in the morning, sharing meals together, exploring somewhere unfamiliar and gradually moving beyond the surface-level conversations of everyday life.

You may arrive alone. You often don't leave feeling that way.

7. A Retreat Experience We Love: Yoga Healing Nature

One retreat company especially close to my heart is Yoga Healing Nature, founded by husband-and-wife team Chloé Porter-Gentile and Christian Gentile. Chloé was one of my instructors during my 200-hour yoga teacher training, and the same care and depth she brings to teaching shows up beautifully in the retreats they create.

Their retreats are built around yoga, nature, nourishing food, movement, rest, and genuine community — creating the kind of immersive environment where people can slow down, reconnect, and feel supported throughout the experience. Chloé and Christian have led more than 40 retreats together, with current offerings in places including France, Italy, and Mexico.

What we love most is that their retreats don’t treat yoga as the entire itinerary. Their South of France experience, for example, combines daily yoga and meditation with hiking, swimming, locally sourced meals, creative experiences, time in nature, and plenty of space to simply restore — exactly the kind of multidimensional retreat experience travelers are increasingly seeking.

8. A Retreat Lets you Discover Your Practice Again

It's easy for yoga to become routine. Same studio. Same spot in the room. Same teachers. Same favorite class times. Routine can be comforting — but occasionally stepping outside it reminds us that our practice belongs to us, not to a particular studio or schedule.

A retreat might introduce you to a style you've never practiced. A teacher who cues something in an entirely different way. Meditation. Breathwork. A morning practice outdoors. Or simply what your body feels like when you aren't rushing into class after spending eight hours sitting at a desk.

Sometimes changing the environment allows you to experience something familiar differently. And that can deepen the relationship you have with yoga long after you return home.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Are Yoga Retreats Only for Experienced Yogis?

Absolutely not. This is one of the biggest misconceptions around yoga retreats. You don't need a perfect handstand. You don't need to know Sanskrit. You don't need to practice six days a week. And you certainly don't need to look a particular way in yoga clothes.

The right retreat should communicate its experience level clearly. Some are designed specifically for beginners. Others offer modifications and multiple class options, while certain intensive retreats and teacher trainings naturally require more experience.

The most important thing is choosing an experience that aligns with where you are. Not where you think a "retreat person" is supposed to be. Yoga itself isn't about arriving perfectly prepared.

Neither is a yoga retreat.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Things You Bring

There is one practical side of retreat life worth considering. You're practicing somewhere unfamiliar. Maybe the studio provides mats. Maybe you're outside. Maybe you're moving between several spaces during the week. And when so much of the purpose is about becoming more present, the last thing you want is equipment constantly pulling your attention away.

That's part of why we believe a familiar, high-performance yoga towel can be such a valuable retreat companion. A Unalome towel is lightweight enough to pack far more easily than another full-size mat, while giving you a familiar surface wherever you're practicing. Our premium non-slip yoga towels feature 44% more silicone grip coverage, designed to help reduce shifting and bunching during movement — particularly when practice gets sweaty.

Because whether you're at your home studio or practicing somewhere halfway across the world: The best equipment supports the ritual without becoming the focus of it.

For something grounded and versatile, explore the Harmony Yoga Towel or Vitality Yoga Towel — both beautiful companions for a practice that may look a little different every day you're away.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

And Don't Underestimate the In-Between Moments

Retreats aren't only about what happens on the mat. They're early coffee before class. Cool mornings. Long flights. Sitting outside with a journal. Savasana when the room feels slightly chilly. Walking to breakfast with your hair still tied up from practice. Those quieter moments are part of the experience too.

That's where soft, easy layers become surprisingly essential — which is exactly the kind of life our Organic French Terry was created for. Comfortable enough for travel. Elevated enough to wear beyond the studio. And intentionally simple enough to move with you through whatever the day becomes.

Maybe We're Not Trying to Escape Our Lives

There's something about the word retreat that can sound like running away. But perhaps that's not what people are looking for at all. Maybe the goal isn't to escape your life. Maybe it's to step outside of it long enough to see it more clearly. To remember what your mornings feel like without immediately reaching for your phone. To move because movement feels good rather than because a watch told you to. To eat slowly. To meet strangers. To rest without earning it first. To practice yoga without looking at the clock.

And then to bring some small piece of that experience home with you.

Because the best retreat probably isn't the one that makes ordinary life feel impossible to return to. It's the one that reminds you how you'd like to move through that life differently. Perhaps that's why yoga retreats feel so relevant right now. We're not simply craving another destination.

We're craving a different way of being while we're there.

Frequently Asked Questions About Yoga Retreats

What are the benefits of going on a yoga retreat?

Yoga retreats can provide dedicated time for movement, rest and reflection away from normal routines. Depending on the retreat, they can also include meditation, nature, cultural experiences, community activities and opportunities to deepen your yoga practice.

Why are yoga retreats so popular in 2026?

Current retreat-industry data points to increasing interest in purposeful travel, rest, mental wellbeing, burnout recovery, nature and human connection. BookRetreats' 2026 survey found 78% of respondents were interested in attending a yoga retreat during the following 12 months.

Are yoga retreats good for beginners?

Many are. Look for retreats explicitly described as all-levels or beginner-friendly, review the planned class styles and intensity, and contact the retreat leader if you're unsure whether the experience matches your practice.

How long are yoga retreats?

They range from single-day and weekend experiences to week-long or longer international retreats. The right length depends on your schedule, budget, experience and how immersive you want the trip to be.

Do I need to bring my own yoga mat to a retreat?

It depends on the retreat. Many provide mats, while others ask guests to bring their own. Always check before traveling. A lightweight non-slip yoga towel can also provide a familiar practice surface without requiring you to travel with another full-size mat.

What should I bring to a yoga retreat?

Comfortable practice clothes, layers, a yoga towel, personal toiletries, sun protection, a reusable water bottle and a journal are common essentials — but the exact packing list depends heavily on destination and retreat type.

And that's where we're headed next.
